Whether you own your own home or condo, or rent an
apartment, home insurance protects your assets in more ways than you may know. Here's a
quick outline of the basics.
Home Insurance combines two types of coverages: Property and Liability.
The Property Coverages insure your Dwelling, Other Structures, and your Personal Property,
so you'll be able to repair, rebuild or replace things that might be damaged or lost. Loss
of Use pays the cost of your temporary housing if you aren't able to stay in your home
because of damage covered by your policy.
Fires, storms, and thieves are just a few of the perils a policy insures against. Other
endorsements, like Guaranteed Replacement Cost, Scheduled Personal Property, Special
Computer, and Trees and Shrubs let you get more specific about what property is insured,
and for what amount.
The Liability Coverages, Personal Liability and Medical Liability, are there in case
you're ever sued for causing injury or damage to someone, either at your own home or away
from it. They cover legal expenses, as well as the damages that may be awarded if you are
found legally responsible.
